Beaches of Kaua'I and Ni'Ihau (A Kolowalu Book)
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (April, 1990)
Author: John R.K. Clark

Superb
Thus book was a labor of love. With years of experience as a lifeguard and surfer, John's curiousity went beyond. He studied oceanography, read all he could, and interviewed all those who knew anything about each beach. The result is the best source of information that will ever be available about Hawaiian beaches.

MAJOR'S BAY SEEMED LIKE A GREAT BEACH.
THE GREATNESS OF KAUAI'S BEACHES.

In depth info on practically every beach on Maui
I used this book when doing research for a web site during our one year stay on Maui. It's awesome! The in-depth info on every beach on the island is up-to-date and insightful, with tid-bits of info only locals know, including history, geography, what's offshore, and more!

A Wonderful Twist On An Old Favorite!
My daughter loves it and found it the next best thing to Barney. We just put her down for the night and she went to sleep willingly and easily after our 5th reading. I like reading it to her because of the colorful artwork and because it reminds me of our last trip to Hawaii

Its da bes'!
This is a very amusing book sent to us by friends in Hawaii. The new words to old favorites are easy to remember. It is a great way to introduce children to common Hawaiian words and elements of Hawaiian culture. The illustrations are well done and colorful. "Go Go Gecko" and "Three Big Pigs" are our favorites. Don't be surprised if your children want Tutus and slippers! I would definitely consider giving Hawaiian Style Mother Goose to friends, especially those with a Hawaiian connection.

The Best of Hawaii
Published in Paperback by Crown Pub (April, 1994)
Authors: Jocelyn K. Fuji and Jocelyn K. Fujii
Average review score:

The Best of Hawaii
We are so disappointed that Ms. Fujii has not updated this book, as we had purchased two editions and used them each time we went to Hawaii! Her suggestions were wonderful, and we were able to plan our trips within our budget and interests. We are now planning another trip after several years have passed, and will use the old edition, with hopes, however, that she will write another!!!

Love it!
We go to Hawaii 5 times a year, and we love this book. A little outdated for the hotels, but food and stores and sights are awesome. A must have. Jocelyn should write an update to this book, instead of writing for Frommer's.

The Betrayal of Liliuokalani: Last Queen of Hawaii 1838-1917
Published in Paperback by Mutual Publishing (December, 1991)
Author: Helena G. Allen
Average review score:

A Hawaiian Tragedy
This is an excellent and well documented biography of Hawaii's last queen. Helena Allen tells the story of Liliuokalani and through her eyes we view the waning days of the Hawaiian monarchy and the oligarchy that would manipulate the media and congress to eventually affect the annexation of the kingdom to the US. Much of this story makes your blood boil. Yet beyond the political injustice, this is a story of a woman in conflict with her times, who manages to weather the storm with grace, dignity and aloha. It's a story that needs to be told and is a must-read for anyone interested in Hawaiian history.

Liliuokalani remains a queen
This book provides a fascinating insight to the last days of the monarchy of Hawaii as seen through the eyes of its last quuen and her hanai daughter. The book is well-documented and a must-read for anyone interested in Hawaian history.

I came away with a sense of awe that one who had been so mistreated could find forgiveness and practice aloha until her death.

Da Jesus Book: Hawaii Pidgin New Testament
Published in Paperback by Intl Academic Bookstore (July, 2000)
Average review score:

Much More Than "Pidgin Feed."
I read this book on three levels because of (a) my marriage of 45 years to a Polynesian woman from Hawaii, (b) my years as a Christian missionary, and (c) my years teaching linguistics. The New Testament in Hawaii Pidgin might at first be misperceived as ethnic humor, but this is a serious project of the Wycliffe Bible Translators, hardly tongue-in-cheek dudes. I found my copy at the nonfacetious Univ. of Hawaii bookstore, where I presented it to two Polynesian cashiers for their opinions. Both reacted with enthusiasm, saying that it was a Bible they could better relate to emotionally, though they also spoke excellent English. It's fun to read, and though I've read the Bible in other languages, I gained A LOT of insight from this disarmingly direct dialect. The spelling reflects pronunciation; "special" is "spesho," "everything" is "erryting," etc. "Jesus chose his 12 apostles" becomes "Jesus ben pick his 12 spesho guys."

Da Wycliffe Translayta guys didn't just cobble it together by "talking funny." Da tranlata guys wen make Da Jesus Book wit local kine peopo. Wuz 26 local peopo dat stay talk Pidgin from small keed time, dat do um. Dey make shua erryting mean da same ting jalike da way da peopo wen write down da Bible firs time. Da main translayta guys, dey da ones dat talk Pidgin all da time, cuz dey know wass da bestes way fo say stuffs so all da local peopo goin undastan. Da team check erryting five o six time, an use all kine commentary books fo make shua da meaning stay okay. Dey use da heavy kine Pidgin from country side, cuz dis book fo da people dat talk Pidgin all da time an English onny litto bit. Also too, fo plenny peopo who onny talk Pidgin, dis way mo bettah fo undastan. Bumbye, going get all Da Jesus Book on CD so can lissen da whole ting. You can almos hea da kine language dat da regula peopo talk erryday as you read this book even silently. I think you'll enjoy it and pick up surprising insights even if you have no interest in Hawaii per se, or even if you're not normally a Bible reader.

Making the WALK Simple
Da Jesus Book is great for everyone. It brakes the Word of the Lord down on a level that makes it so easy to understand. The book is written in a Hawaiian dialect, but anyone can enjoy the book. It makes a great companion to your usual Bible. I would recommend using this book as a study guide--it is especially helpful to guide in understanding the usual tranlation. Da Jesus Book is a must for every Christian!

Dec. 7, 1941: The Day the Japanese Attacked Pearl Harbor
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (December, 1991)
Authors: Gordon W. Prange, Donald M. Goldstein, and Katherine V. Dillon
Average review score:

Fact-filled history of the attack itself
This is the centerpiece of Prange's (and Goldstein and Dillon's) Pearl Harbor trilogy. 'At Dawn We Slept' set the stage for the attack, and 'Pearl Harbor: The Verdict of History' summarizes and draws conclusions. But this title, 'December 7, 1941,' tells the story of the attack itself, from the point of view of both American and Japanese planners, participants, and spectators.

Prange's research is stunning, and he presents his facts in a straightforward and non-sensationalist way. He doesn't point fingers or call names, he just lays things on the table. As someone who's read a fair amount of Pearl Harbor literature, I really appreciate that.

I recommend Prange's trilogy for anyone interested in serious Pearl Harbor scholarship. And if you're just looking for a fact-filled, yet easy to read, introduction to the event itself, 'December 7, 1941' is the title for you.

Highly recommended.

An excellent, well researched book of the Day of Infamy.
This book is a must. Though difficult to obtain, it is well worth the wait. It is a usual Gordon Prange Book: Well researched, easy to read, and without errors. Prange's relentless search, and also of his "sucessors" after his death, for the TRUTH about the the attack on Pearl Harbor, make this a must read. It belongs with Prange's other works "Miracle at Midway", "At Dawn We Slept", and "At Dawn We Slept: The Verdict of History".

This book dispells many myths (as do the other books) about the December 7th attack: FDR's "guilt"(he was innocent), Kimmel and Short's responsibility (they were scapegoats), The USS Arizona (a bomb NEVER went down the smoke stack). Prange's exhaustive research gives an accurate account of Dec. 7th.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the Pearl Harbor attack, and should actually be the FIRST book to read on the subject.

I cannot praise this book and his other works enough. He IS the authority.

Dolphin Days: The Life and Times of the Spinner Dolphin
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1991)
Author: Kenneth S. Norris
Average review score:

a great book
Dolphin Days is a great book about a guy who researched dolphins. It explains their behavior and scientifics without getting boring. I highly recommend it!

A thinking-person's book about dolphins
As a graduate student in Hawaii, I was fortunate enough to have encounters with dolphins on several snorkle outings. It is certainly a special experience, but stop reading here if you think I am about to launch into a new-age rant about "...how dolphins are helping humans to evolve"!

Norris presents an accessible description about dolphin behavior and the science involved in that study. Although I have a science background, I know little biology, and yet Norris clearly presents this work in terms I could understand, and that any thinking person will be comfortable with. I have since purchased other books by Norris on dolphins, and schedule snorkle trips everytime I visit the Islands. If you have seen the latest IMAX movie "Dolphins" (dedicated to Norris), now is the time to read the book!
